Student Background Stories

  • 15 year old girl

…was born in a polygamous family. Her father has four wives and nineteen children. We learned of her predicament when we visited a local high school. She sat for her KCPE in 2023 and scored 234 marks.

She faced several hurdles in her pursuit of education. She was forced to undergo FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) at the age of 13 years — her father wanted her married to a polygamous man of 47 years. She escape from home and was hosted by a church minister for two years. This led to a bitter quarrel between the father and the church. The minister surrendered her to her family immediately after her KCPE in November 2023.

Once home, the father, in collaboration with her mother, organized for a marriage to the same person (this man had already paid part of the dowery.)

It was at this juncture that a teacher at the school tipped us, and we visited the chief who was glad that we had come in to rescue her.

When the administration visited the home, the girl had vanished. It was a week later that we received a call from the chief asking to meet her at a specific location. With the blessing of the chief and the maternal uncle, we took custody of the girl who by then was so stressed that she was contemplating suicide. The chief advised that she be enrolled in a high school far from her home.

It would be unwise to allow this girl to go back to her home right now she would be hosted by the scholarship team during all the school break.

This sweet girl needs guiding and counseling plus a lot of encouragement. We thank you for giving hope to her.

  • 17 year old girl

“…was born to a single mother who had four other children……to date, she doesn’t know her biological father. She was enrolled at Daylight Model in 2019, but dropped out due to lack of fees.  She was forced to join a public school where she sat for her KCPE in 2021.

This student grew up in a hostile environment where her mother drinks and sells traditional alcohol.  Her elder siblings have given birth to children at home too and joined their mother in selling alcohol. She lacked all basic necessities including sanitary towels and even decent clothes. A motor cycle rider took advantage of this poverty and lured her into defilement resulting in pregnancy. The mother tried to have the girl terminate the pregnancy, but local health workers came to her rescue. The man responsible for the defilement was reported, and later on he was jailed…she delivered a baby boy.

This is a case of a child delivering a baby. We have enrolled her in a day school because she has to go back home during lunch time to breastfeed the baby.”

  • 18 year old boy

…sat for his KCPE at daylight model school in 2020 (this is the class that sat for KCPE in march 2021) because lessons had been distracted by Covid outbreak. He is being brought up by a single mother after experiencing domestic violence.

In 2023 he developed a growth in the spinal chord that exhausted all his mother’s savings. The family has rented a house that is shared with four other siblings. He dropped out of high school just like his siblings.

We took him back to high school this year ….as we write, he is back home because of the pain he is undergoing. He is supposed to be taken back to the hospital for checkup. His mother, who is a hawker, cannot afford to take him back to the hospital. His father, who was unemployed and a drunkard vanished into thin air.

Thanks friends for giving this boy a second chance, but will also appeal to you to assist in his treatment.

  • 17 year old boy

…his mother threw the infant in a pit latrine immediately after birth. The infant was rescued by neighbors who heard the cry.

He was enrolled at Daylight Model School where he did his KCPE last year (2023). This boy was brought up by a poor maternal grandmother, because even after the rescue his mother still disowned him. To date… he doesn’t know his father.

Unfortunately for him, his grandmother passed away and left him under the care of a maternal uncle. His uncle experienced mental problems and sometimes threatened to harm the boy.

We enrolled him in a boys high school, and currently he has no home because his uncle is unreliable — and the only aunt who would have assisted him is married and has her own financial problems. His mother also gave birth to other children, whom she also abandoned. This boy’s aunt has requested that he should stay with the Scholarship Team during school breaks.

  • 16 year old boy

…his mother bore him out of wedlock and got married elsewhere, then abandoned him in the care of his maternal grandmother. He was enrolled at Daylight Model School and sat his KCPE in 2023. Unfortunately his grandmother passed awya the same year.

When we visited him in December 2023 we discovered that they lived in a very poor condition. It was a sight that brought tears in our eyes. His step father is very hostile to him, therefore he cannot stay with him.

… he was enrolled at a boys high school. This case requires a peaceful environment during school breaks.

  • 14 year old girl

…she was born on the borders of West Pokot, Elgeiyo Marakwet, and Trans-nzoia counties. Her parents are peasant famers who undertake menial jobs to survive. She has 4 siblings — two who didn’t proceed to high school because they lacked the fees. The siblings are now engaged in child labor. They pick tea leaves in order to assist their parents.

They own barely an 1/8 of an acre of land. She sat for KCPE in 2023, and we enrolled her at a Girls High School situated on the borders of three counties: West Pokot, Elgeiyo Marakwet, and Trans-nzoia counties.

  • 14 year old boy

…his father is employed as a herdsman, while his mother who is sickly is a house wife. This boy is the only son in the family. His three sisters got married at a tender age of barely 16 years — they never learned beyond primary school. He was enrolled at Daylight Model School in 2020, but dropped out in 2023 because he could not afford fees.

On January we enrolled him in grade seven at a local junior secondary school.

  • 18 year old girl

Her mother abandoned her when she was only 7 months old — under the care of her frail, managerial grandmother. Up to now, the mother has never been seen or heard of her whereabouts.

We learned of this girl’s case through the high school administration, who contacted us (we had previously sponsored a student last year.)

She was supposed to be in form three this year, but she wasted the whole of last year being engaged in child labor. In order to care for herself and her aged grandmother, we enrolled her in form 2 this year 2024.

She was a sight to behold when we met her. We bought her a few dresses and basic necessities. This is a girl who had taken on a very enormous responsibility of taking care of her aged, widowed grandmother and herself. She will join the Scholarship Team for school breaks.
